Welcome to the 2010 Heritage Farm growing season! We are glad to be back again this year with some new and exciting crop additions. We are carrying our old favorites: Sun Gold,Rose, Kelloggs Breakfast, & Pineapple tomatoes. We also trying some new varieties this year, too... Black Prince, Moskavich, & Tigerella to name a few.
Joe started the tomato and pepper seeds in late winter, and they were ready for the field by May first. Although it was a rough start due to a late frost, all the veggies look great! We just tasted our first Sun Golds last Saturday, and they were delicious!
Our spring harvest has been bountiful! Hard and soft neck garlic is in the drying shed ready for sale. We can attest to its great flavor as it has been a main ingredient in most of our recent dishes. Beautiful Cranberry Red, Carib, and Yukon Gold potatoes have also graced our dinner plates. The colors are lovely and the potatoes are great for summer salads and kabobs!
All of our crops can be purchased through The Local Flavor Farm Buyers Club and The Farmer Girls websites. As always we appreciate your support, and we are honored to share our fresh produce with all of you.
At Heritage Farm, we are proud to use organic and sustainable growing techniques. We use no synthetic pesticides, no herbicides, and no Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO). We fertilize with composted plant materials, animal manure, and other Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) approved fertilizers. Weeds are controlled by mulching, hoeing, mowing, and hand-weeding. Companion plantings of herbs and flowers also deter pests and attract pollinators. You are welcome to visit our gardens to see the process first-hand, ask questions, or discuss our growing philosophy.
Although change is constant in today’s society, some things do remain the same. The Appersons have been Culpeper County residents since the farm was established in 1789. Five generations later, Joseph and Hilda Apperson along with their sons and grandson continue to raise crops and livestock. The Apperson farm is the second oldest continually run family farm in Culpeper. We believe in nurturing the land through proven environmental conservation practices. The farm has been recognized as a Virginia Century Farm and awarded the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Conservation award. Now Joe and Jill Apperson continue the tradition of providing the community with high quality, locally grown food. As we look to the future, we embrace our past!
